As Harper families know, when you meet Conrad Wolski he soon goes from being a crossing guard to a dear friend or member of your family. Even he says the best part about the job is “dealing with the children, grandparents and parents. They are all my extended family.” At a recent milestone birthday, Harper families spread the word, chipped in on a birthday gift, and surprised Conrad to sing “Happy Birthday” to him at his corner. He was an even bigger celebrity than usual that day! He has been working for District 39 since 1999 and started as a paraprofessional at Highcrest and Harper. His social work background and warm personality made him a perfect fit for these positions. Conrad likes to go above and beyond what his duties are. On Fridays he hands out Starburst candies, dogs are treated daily to special snacks, and on Halloween he gives out goody bags to all students who pass through his crosswalk. Always there with advice he tells parents and students, “When you are finished with your education make sure you like what you do. Then it’s not work. I love my job!” One of his favorite D39 memories is being assigned to a boy with behavioral challenges. They became very close and at the boy’s Bar Mitzvah Conrad lit one of the candles during the service. The Every Day Hero award is “beyond my expectations,” he said. Conrad, you are beyond our expectations!
