At the start of the 2014-2015 school year, the Foundation’s Fine Arts Committee launched our Rack*It public arts program. Art teachers from all 6 schools incorporated a creative bike-rack design project into their curricula to get K-8 students involved in this new community-wide event.
Kids created bike designs using the theme “Wilmette community” and each school submitted 5 drawings to a Design Committee, comprised of D39 Art Teachers, Foundation members, cycling advocates and community stakeholders. The committee chose two designs which were brought to life by a metal fabricator.

On May 9th, the Foundation was proud to host the Rack*It Bike Tour to commemorate the unveiling of our two new bike racks in Wilmette.
D39 Foundation volunteers led a parade of cyclists between the two locations of the new bike racks. Riders gathered at Village Hall for the first ribbon cutting ceremony and then waves of riders followed the D39 safe-biking routes and paraded to the Wilmette Community Rec Center where the second bike racked was unveiled.
Thank you to all of our riders and volunteers who braved the cold and windy weather for this exciting event to celebrate our community and the arts!
All funds to complete this community art project and the unveiling celebration were made possible through the Foundation’s Sam Mikaelian Fine Arts Fund.
